“The Run for the Roses” delves into the history of the Kentucky Derby, including origin, traditions, interesting facts, and a Derby winner with a local connection to Iron Mountain. 

“My sister loves the Derby, and, as she was talking about it, I wondered how it began. While researching, I found Iron Mountain has ties to the 2014 winner, California Chrome. I thought it would be a fun and great idea for a program,” said Emily Cummings, Local History/Adult Programming Coordinator at the Dickinson County Library. 

The “most exciting two minutes of sports” is held annually on the first Saturday each May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and a lush blanket of over 400 roses is awarded to the winner each year.

Attendees are encouraged to wear Derby gear, including big hats, and will receive a Derby pin to keep. The Braumart is excited to welcome Emily back to our Historic Lecture Series. Her presentations always exceed expectations.
